Personal Connection Drives Meghna Iyer’s Contributions to ALS Research

For Meghna Iyer, BME 2026, biomedical research is personal. When she came to Georgia Tech, she wanted to connect with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) experts to learn more about research that could help her mother, Suneeti, who had been diagnosed with the disease.  
 
Cassie Mitchell, associate professor in the Wallace H. Coulter Department of Biomedical Engineering knew Iyer’s personal connection and knowledge about ALS could provide valuable insights to a project using artificial intelligence (AI) to study how ALS, Alzheimer’s disease, and frontotemporal dementia overlap.  Iyer helped guide what the code should do and ensured it was grounded in science and experience.
