Atlanta, GA — The Wallace H. Coulter Department of Biomedical Engineering at Georgia Tech and Emory University is proud to announce the launch of its newly redesigned website, marking a significant milestone in the department’s ongoing commitment to innovation, accessibility, and strategic growth.

Initiated in June 2024, the website redesign project was led by the Minneapolis-based digital agency Electric Citizen, known for its expertise in higher education web development. The revamped site introduces a modern, user-friendly interface with improved navigation, mobile responsiveness, and SEO-optimized content designed to better serve key external audiences.

The new site transforms the department’s digital presence into an external-facing platform tailored to prospective students and parents, alumni, donors, corporate partners, and industry leaders in biomedical engineering. It highlights the department’s academic programs, research strengths, and community impact while offering intuitive pathways to explore degrees, faculty, news, and giving opportunities.

“This website redesign is a direct reflection of our department’s strategic plan to remain one of the top biomedical engineering programs in the country,” said Dr. Alyssa Panitch, Chair of the Wallace H. Coulter Department of Biomedical Engineering. “By focusing on clarity, accessibility, and engagement, we’re not only showcasing our world-class research and education but also strengthening connections with the broader biomedical community.”

The redesign includes:

  • Streamlined navigation and content architecture
  • Greater visibility of academic program offerings and research and translation activities in the Department
  • Enhanced accessibility and mobile compatibility
  • SEO-friendly pages to improve visibility in search engines
  • Dedicated sections for news, events, and giving
  • A refreshed visual identity aligned with Georgia Tech and Emory branding

“The new site navigation was greatly simplified and refocused around 5 core areas: the academic programs, the people, research, the campus experience and reasons to choose BME (outcomes),” said Dan Moriarty, founder and CEO of Electric Citizen. “Clear call-to-action buttons invite users to explore, visit or apply, while easy-to-read stats emphasize why BME is a leader in the field.”

Moriarty’s team was tasked with a range of deliverables, from strategy and visuals to copywriting, testing and custom web development. The agency’s primary goal, Moriarty said, was focused on developing a more impactful website that better represents Coulter BME and its offerings, while improving engagement with prospective students.

We did so by focusing on ways to simplify and improve site navigation, introducing a more modern and visually engaging design, and rewriting site content to emphasize what made BME different. All while presenting webpages in an accessible and easy-to-understand format.

The agency also focused on merging the Emory and Georgia Tech brand standards to create a unique visual identity that reflects both institutions.

“Visually, we introduced new shapes, textures, and media to subtly delight and engage the user, while the new copy is both rich and easy to scan, giving desktop and mobile users a quick overview of all the information they need to know,” Moriarty said.

Additionally, new tools on the backend allow site editors to generate and manage dynamic multimedia experiences without requiring coding or a technical background.

“The new site meets accessibility guidelines and is built around a rock-solid new CMS installation that is built to last,” Moriarty added.
