Shalu Suri is a Senior Academic Professional in the Department of Biomedical Engineering at Georgia Tech and serves as Co-Director of Engineering Workforce Development for the NSF-funded Cell Manufacturing Technologies (CMaT) Engineering Research Center. She joined CMaT at Georgia Tech in 2020 as Associate Director and became the Co-Director in 2022.
Before joining Georgia Tech, Dr. Suri was a lecturer in Biomedical Engineering at Cornell University, where she was instrumental in designing and teaching multiple undergraduate and graduate classes for which she received Cornell’s Teaching Excellence Award.
She earned her undergraduate degree from Kanpur University, an M.S. from the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (India), and a Ph.D. in Biomedical Engineering from the University of Texas at Austin, followed by postdoctoral training at Georgia Tech.

Research Interests
As the Co-Director of NSF ERC for Cell Manufacturing Technologies (CMaT) Workforce Development pillar, Dr. Suri spearheads multiple high-impact efforts across academic levels (K-12 through industry) towards curriculum development, professional education, and preparing the future cell manufacturing workforce. Dr. Suri is responsible for the supervision and coordination of all CMaT education, workforce development, and outreach events, including summer and year-long programs for undergraduates, high-school students, K-12 teachers, and students with disabilities. In addition, Dr. Suri responsibilities include development and assessment of CMaT-specific curricular modules for these various groups. Dr. Suri also partners with several CMaT-affiliated programs, such as those targeting 2-year technical and community colleges, NIIMBL, and GeorgiaBio, to expand the number of trainees impacted by CMaT educational programs.
Her contributions have been recognized through multiple honors, including Georgia Tech’s 2024 Outstanding Professional Education Award for her contributions to the field of professional education, and the 2023 and 2025 Student Recognition of Excellence in Teaching CIOS Honor Roll.
Teaching Interests
In addition, Dr. Suri has championed the development and launch of 2 professional training programs in the cell and gene therapy manufacturing field in collaboration with the International Society for Cell and Gene Therapy (ISCT). Together, these professional training programs have trained 400+ participants across the globe.
