This minor requires the successful completion of at least 15 credit hours of coursework selected from lists of approved biomedical engineering and bioscience courses. The goal of the minor program is to educate students in how to apply engineering fundamentals to solve problems in biology and medicine. The program should be of particular interest to those students who plan to pursue advanced degrees in biomedical engineering and/or medicine.
All of the courses must be taken on a letter grade basis and completed with an overall grade point average of at least 2.0. At least 9 of the 15 hours must be advanced upper level coursework (numbered 3000 or above). No more than 6 semester hours of Special Topics courses may be included in a minor program. Courses required by name and number and/or used to satisfy Core Areas A through E in a student's major degree program may not be used in satisfying the course requirements for the minor. However, courses used in a minor may also be used to fulfill other elective requirements (e.g. free and technical electives, etc.) in the student's major degree program.
When a student petitions for a degree, they should complete a petition for the minor and have it approved by the Associate Chair for Undergraduate Studies in the Wallace H. Coulter Department of Biomedical Engineering. The petition for the minor will accompany the petition for the major degree when reviewed and approved by the major school. The two forms are then submitted to the Registrar. The minor will be conferred at the same time the degree is conferred and the degree and minor will be recorded on the student's transcript. The minor will not appear on the diploma and cannot be conferred retroactively upon students who have graduated.
