In a streak that extends now to 15 of the last 19 years, the joint graduate biomedical engineering program at Georgia Tech and Emory University is No. 2 in the nation, according to the latest rankings from U.S. News & World Report.

Released each spring, the rankings reflect the assessment of peer department heads around the nation about the strength of graduate education in the Wallace H. Coulter Department of Biomedical Engineering. The Department remains the top graduate program among public universities.

“It’s gratifying to continue to be recognized as one of the very best programs in the country year after year,” said Machelle Pardue, interim Wallace H. Coulter Department Chair.

“These rankings reflect the dedication and tireless efforts of our faculty and staff to create an unparalleled learning environment where our trainees work on challenging problems in health and healthcare and find innovative solutions to clinical problems. The rankings also speak to the supremely talented graduate students in our labs and classrooms and our alumni, who are making a difference in the world and demonstrating the power of a Coulter BME degree.”

The Coulter Department shares the second-place ranking for 2023 with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. The program joins every other discipline in the Georgia Tech College of Engineering in the top nine. The College overall ranked No. 7, up one spot from the rankings released in March 2021.

U.S. News also ranked the Emory University School of Medicine 22nd nationally among research-oriented medical schools.
