Research Interests:

Rusty studied biomedical engineering at Vanderbilt and medicine at Emory.  As a biomedical engineer he investigated electrophysiologic signals during intra-operative cortical mapping and developed an interest in brain-machine interface technologies.  After internship, he spent 8 years as a flight surgeon in the Air Force where he was privileged to care for soldiers at home and overseas.  He experienced first-hand the immediate trauma of combat injuries and the devastating aftermath encompassing severe physical deficits. These experiences led him to training in neurology.  He was excited to return home to Emory and appreciates the diverse patient population in a program including Emory Hospital, Grady Hospital, and the VA.  Rusty has a long-standing interest in the clinical, neurophysiological, and engineering implications of the interface between the human nervous system and machines.
