The Georgia Tech Biomedical Engineering Department invites applications for a postdoctoral fellowship to contribute to a department-wide project to foster the development of an entrepreneurial mindset within undergraduate engineering students. Engineers equipped with this mindset understand the bigger picture, recognize opportunities, and learn from mistakes to create value for themselves and others.
To achieve our vision, we will design and implement a portfolio-thinking pedagogical approach that promotes students’ learning through reflection and storytelling. Storytelling, reflection, and folio thinking promotes deeper learning, enhances achievement, boosts engagement, fosters collaboration, promotes a more personalized learning experience, and provides an alternative way for students to demonstrate what they have learned and who they have become.
The Fellow will contribute to a research program that seeks to answer the following research questions: 1) how can folio-thinking, reflections, and storytelling be sustainably integrated into highly technical engineering curricula, 2) how do the interventions impact students’ learning, motivation, and entrepreneurial mindset, and 3) what approaches are effective in scaling up and transferring these approaches to other departments and institutions? The Fellow will assist with designing and conducting the research studies which may include qualitative, quantitative, and mixed-methods approaches, and will have the opportunity to develop and evaluate educational programs for faculty and students. The Fellow will also have the opportunity to recruit and mentor a team of undergraduate research assistants to assist in their work.
The Fellow will work with the project’s three co-PIs: Dr. Paul Benkeser, Dr. James Stubbs, and Dr. Joe Le Doux, as well as with other faculty with interests and expertise in engineering education and the entrepreneurial mindset.
- Conduct literature reviews, present briefs, and organize resources.
- Plan and conduct research projects autonomously while working collaboratively with the Co-PIs and project staff.
- Participate in project related meetings as needed.
- Conduct quantitative and qualitative analyses.
- Help develop and evaluate scalable and transferrable educational interventions.
- Present findings at conferences, workshops, and stakeholder meetings.
- Perform other related duties as needed.
Applications are welcome from recipients of a PhD in social psychology, educational psychology, higher education, engineering education, or related fields. The ideal candidate will have a demonstrated ability to perform both quantitative and qualitative analysis. Preference will be given to candidates with prior experience in designing and/or implementing teaching and learning interventions in higher education, particularly if these experiences involved folio thinking, reflections, and/or storytelling, especially if in the context of engineering education.
Date: Start Date Negotiable (June 15, 2018 – August 15, 2018)
Research site: Georgia Tech’s main campus in Midtown Atlanta
Salary: $60,000/year with benefits.
Contract: The appointment is renewable annually contingent upon funding and satisfactory performance.
